Your details

Use your own pay and dates. Your entries stay on this device.

Leave can normally start from 11 weeks before the due week.

Use your actual annual contractual pay, not a full-time salary if you work part-time. Where pay varies significantly, the Burgundy Book uses the preceding 12-week average for a week’s salary; enter its annual equivalent here. Payslips below change SMP only.
Include recognised service with earlier local authorities. Ask HR about academy service and breaks; this is different from the SMP current-employer test.
For the separate 26-week SMP service check. Enter the current employer date even if earlier service counts for occupational pay.
Where do you pay Income Tax?
Tax residence does not change the occupational agreement modelled above.
Pension and returning early
Suggested from the 2026/27 TPS band for the salary entered (7.4%–12%). Check your payslip; enter 0 if opted out. Scottish teachers’ pensions are not modelled.
Leave blank to model the full 52 weeks.
Use payslips for SMP

These earnings change SMP. The occupational full-pay basis remains the annual salary you entered.

How it works

Teachers maternity pay: the scheme modelled

These stages assume the relevant occupational conditions and separate SMP rules are met.

Weeks 1–4
Full pay

SMP is included.

Weeks 5–6
90% pay

SMP is included.

Weeks 7–18
Half pay + SMP

Capped at normal full pay.

Weeks 19–39
SMP only

Then weeks 40–52 are unpaid.

The calculator uses 2026/27 statutory and pension assumptions beyond this year where future rates are unknown. Pay rises, salary sacrifice, student loans, Maternity Allowance, shared parental leave, pension benefit accrual and one-off payroll adjustments are not modelled. A simplified fixed pension percentage is applied to paid earnings. Check your actual policy and payslip.

Teachers maternity pay questions

Who qualifies for the Burgundy Book scheme?

The normal service test is one year of continuous teaching service with one or more local authorities by the start of the 11th week before the expected birth week. HR must confirm which previous employment counts and that your contract adopts the scheme. Notice and evidence requirements also apply.

What if I do not return to teaching?

The normal commitment is 13 weeks, including school closures. The employer may reclaim occupational payments after the first six weeks if you do not meet it; SMP is not repayable. The No option leaves out the 12 half-pay weeks and models the first six weeks as retained under the clawback rule. Confirm the position with HR before resigning. A changed part-time return can require an agreed equivalent period.

Do I get extra maternity pay during school holidays?

School holidays do not pause the maternity pay schedule. The calculator follows consecutive weeks from your leave start. Ask payroll how pay awards or a change in your teaching hours affect the amounts.

How reliable is the suggested pension rate?

It uses the official 2026/27 TPS table indexed before the administrator transition. Teachers’ Pensions is showing a maintenance notice until 2 November 2026. Treat the suggestion as a starting point and enter your actual payslip percentage.

Can I use a different employer scheme?

Yes. Use the general maternity pay calculator to enter the stages in your own policy. The figures here are estimates for the named agreement, not an entitlement decision.
